While it has been an impressive year, and the media keeps talking about the returns of the Dow in absolute terms, this year has not been record setting where it matters most-percentage returns. The returns of the TSP funds for both 2013 and 2009 were both much better. What is notable about those years is 2009 was a recession recovery year and in 2013 bonds were crushed so investors turned to stocks. For example, the F Fund had one of its few negative years in 2013 at -1.7%. How do these years put 2017 into perspective? First, overheated the stock market is not. It could be said that some technology stocks may suffer and drag down the market, but overall firms are healthy, they have cash, will be keeping more to enable stock repurchases, and the economy is growing at a healthy pace. Second, bonds are healthy, but not overly attractive. While investors believe there is money to be made in the market, they will stay in the market. I will continue to remain diversified across all three of the stock funds in the TSP as my assessment of the markets and economy are still very positive. Keep Investing!
