Welcome to July! The year is now half over and it looks like it is a pretty average year. We are seeing strong growth in the US economy, but we are also seeing higher fuel prices as well. Additionally, the tariff war hasn't really heated up as much as people thought it would. I think our economy has given us some breathing room to do several things in the next year. First, the Fed will probably continue to raise interest rates in order to provide our economy with a cushion for the next recession. I think several hikes are being priced into the market. Second, as our economy is strong, our position on tariffs is quite strong. President Trump can afford to have retaliatory tariffs placed on US goods as he has several GDP points to play with. It is the art of negotiation and he will ultimately settle once he thinks he has achieved all he can achieve, but not at the expense of a large portion of the GDP. In my opinion, keeping the GDP over 2% is probably what he will aim for, and any tariff actions that threaten that number is where we will find the common ground. Ultimately, the result will be a lessoning of tariffs and a return to higher growth and a shift in some of the overall economics of our country. The takeaway from these two scenarios is a slump in returns overall and greater uncertainty in both the C and I fund as larger companies hold more debt and tariff war will impact companies in both categories, with a lessor impact on S fund companies. Keep investing!
