Perspective. My word of the day, week, and month. While the markets and our investments took unprecedented losses this week, the actual losses are in line with losses experienced in the last 14 months. December 2018 - C Fund -9.03%, May 2019 - C Fund -6.36%. So where do we go from here? The global markets are facing a risk that we have not seen since 1918. While news is currently breaking that the virus is spreading or has been spreading in the USA for 6 weeks, I must take the long-term view on my retirement and not panic. The world economy is going to suffer, and the markets have begun to price in GDP declines. If I were to switch my investments from the C Fund to the F Fund or even the G Fund (a fund I never invest in), I would lock in my losses from the last month. I am willing to risk further losses in the C Fund for the potential upside we may see once the market determines the actual impact to the US and world economies. Mr. Market is always looking to take the money of panicked investors, but I will not be one of them. Further bolstering my confidence is a more aggressive Federal Reserve rate cut, which Goldman Sachs announced tonight. From their analysis, they think we could see a full 50 basis point cut this month and a 100 basis point cut for the year. The markets love nothing more than rate cuts. So, in the end, perspective. Yes, we are in uncharted waters, but we have seen market drops like this before, and we have many levers to pull to improve our situation. Keep investing!
